'Unbound', 16"x20", Oil on Canvas, Contemporary Realism Still Life Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
'Unbound' by Paula Peacock 16" x 20" Oil on Canvas A breath of fresh air! After almost 3 years of my life being consumed and controlled by grief because of the loss of my son, I now have moments of feeling like Paula again. I’m still grieving and realize I always will.  What we were is gone. What will be is yet to come. But, we will be. The sky is a bit brighter as the sun rises, symbolic of a new day, with the heavyweight of darkness being pushed aside. A beautiful blue butterfly releases the restraints of grief and anger, allowing me the ability to breathe again and to look forward to what the day may bring. Live each day as though it’s all we have and remember to tell your children you love them no matter their age. They will never outgrow hearing it and we should never tire of saying it. 'Double Departure' Contemporary Realism Still-Life Paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
Double Departure by Paula Peacock Oil on Canvas 16" X 20" In 2014 I lost my little sister to breast cancer and my son was killed 6 months later. This painting honors the people I lost. The monk figurine represents me and the two monks in the mirror represent my son and my sister. I am on this side and they have transitioned to the other side yet we will always remain connected as shown by the thin white ribbon. The white butterflies on the other side(in the mirror) are indicative of angels (for me). The nautilus indicates my mental state at the time, trapped, alone, yet protected by the outer walls I had erected while I dealt with grief. Weekly Oil painting Classes for the Beginner If you are interested in learning how to paint, I specialize in teaching the beginning beginner every Saturday at my studio in Longmont, CO. 'Looking for Me' Contemporary Realism Still-Life by Paula Peacock

Image
'Looking for Me' by Paula Peacock 30" x 24" Oil on Canvas " I wonder if I've been changed during the night. Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!" (Alice in Wonderland) After my son was murdered in 2014 I started a series of paintings and sculptures which I call 'Altered Soul'. This is one of those paintings. Major depression had set in and my world and as well as myself had changed, never to be the same again. I was missing what life used to be for me and I was searching for healing. I heard Buddhism is not a religion but an education in searching for the 'self.' The 'self' is who I lost when I lost my son. I was, and still am, on a journey of healing. I am much wiser and understanding now and have gone through that tunnel to the ...

'Gulliver's Pear' Original Contemporary Still-Life Oil paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
Gulliver's Pear by Paula Peacock 8" x 8" Oil on Canvas Painting is a journey of self-discovery where we lose the mask we wear every day for the protection of our ego, our heart, our soul and bare it all for all to see. It's a scary thing to show your paintings to the world. To show people who you really are, to allow yourself to be vulnerable and judged. So we either conform to what's expected of us and discard who we are,-- or love ourselves for who we are, do what we love, take a chance, step out there butt naked and moon the world. Once upon a time, I tried to conform. I painted pretty little pictures that matched your decor and sold those pretty little pictures very well.  Don't get me wrong. Artists paint gorgeous paintings that I wish I had the talent to do, but it just wasn't me or my personality. Ask anyone who knows me. I was bored out of my ever-lovin' mind! It got to where I didn't look forward to going to my studio t...

'Lilies with Critters' Contemporary Realism Still Life of Paula Peacock

Image
'Lilies with Critters' by Paula Peacock 24 in. X 30 in. Oil on Canvas This painting signifies an awakening for me. After the killing of my son, I went into a major depression and found myself creating dark paintings. I realize now I was creating a visual journal of depression and grief. Thirteen paintings & six sculptures later the heaviness left me and this painting is indicative of me waking up, coming out of my cocoon. It represents an active Springtime when insects and birds become busy with an air of excitement, renewal, and growth. You will find a snail, a ladybug, a butterfly and a hummingbird. Art really is therapeutic and I would be the first to say, it saved my life. If you are interested in learning to paint I hold WEEKLY OIL PANTING CLASSES & Bi-Monthly Workshops Every Monday and Wednesday 11 am - 1 pm   (ex. holidays)  Come join a great group every week for mentoring, painting and good company. You can paint with oil paints, watercolor or...

'Looking for Happy' Contemporary Still Life by Paula Peacock

Image
'Looking for Happy' by Paula Peacock 24" x 30" Oil on Canvas In 2014, my little sister lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 51. Five months later I received a call from the Denver Coroner telling me my son had been murdered. Two days after that horrific phone call came yet another; local police informed me my art studio had been broken into and vandalized. Five of my paintings had been damaged or destroyed. Needless to say, major depression took over my life and I embarked upon a 5-year journey of creating dark paintings and sculptures as my way of expressing my grief. This is one of those paintings- The Buddhas depicted are known as the Happy Buddha. In this painting, they remain somewhat hidden, in the shadows or behind objects. This is representative of a search for happiness but not quite finding it. One feels it’s just around the corner but never fully in view. The string is our connection to the different aspects of our lives that define our...

'Coming Out', Contemporary Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
'Coming Out' by Paula Peacock 11"x14" Oil on Canvas This painting was inspired by one of my students whom I taught for 5 years. At 13 years old, she announced to me she was gay. A year or so later she announced she was bi-sexual, then transgender/transsexual, then simply said, "it's complicated". She kept this information from her family for at least 5 years. Her teenaged angst was multiplied ten-fold while she struggled with her identity, hiding who she really was. Towards the end of our time spent together teaching and learning, she finally came out to her mother. There was an overnight change in her personality. She was relieved, happy, elated, light as a feather, sunshiny and danced on-air to name a few emotions. I thought of her as a butterfly emerging from her cocoon and was free to fly like the beautiful person she was. She graduated high school and left for college. I miss seeing her weekly for our 2 hours of making art and talking and ...

"The Key to Me" Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
'The Key to Me' Oil on Linen 16" x 20" by Paula Peacock The inner pear shows an attempt to discard the outer dark cloak of constant depression (the outer layer) which serves as a hardened armor and a disguise to fool, not only myself, but others as well.  The inner pear tries to emerge completely out, to be what she once was, but continues holding on to her protective tough skin not quite ready to bravely step out and be happy without feeling guilt. "THE NARCISSISTS MIRROR" Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

Image
The Narcissists' Mirror 28" x  34" Oil on Canvas by   Paula Peacock A wilted and almost dried up daffodil (scientific name narcissus) gazes into a tri-folding mirror and sees only himself as beautiful and all else (the purple tulip) surrounding him as not as perfect, beautiful or as delightful as he sees himself to be. When in reality, it is he who is ugly on the inside and outside because of his conceit. The dragonfly represents self delusion and the bubbles allude to the brevity of life. 'All the Kings' Horses....' Contemporary Realism by Paula Peacock

Image
All the Kings' Horses...12" x 16", Oil on Canvas If you have questions regarding this painting please email me at paulapeacock@rocketmail.com I've been thinking about doing this painting for years. I've had a fascination of nursery rhyme origins for quite some time. This painting is about the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty. The following information is an excerpt from rhymes.org.uk; "Humpty Dumpty was a term used in fifteenth century England describing someone who was obese. Humpty Dumpty was in fact believed to be a large cannon! It was used during the English Civil War ( 1642 - 1649). A huge cannon, called Humpty Dumpty, was placed on the wall next to St Mary's Church. The historical events detailing the siege of Colchester are well documented - references to the cannon ( Humpty Dumpty) are as follows: *St Mary's Church is fortified and a large cannon is placed on the roof which was fired by ‘One-Eyed Jack Thompson' *July 14th / July 15th 1648 - ...
